The Teacher – Student Relationship in Learning
Department of English
A student – teacher relationship in the classroom is a positive relationship between the teacher and the student in efforts to gain trust and respect from each other. It is the positive and respectful connection between a teacher and a student that supports learning and personal growth. This relationship may consist of getting to know the students better, providing opportunity and encouraging the students to become stronger learners every day. It’s not a friendship or personal relationship, but a structured, professional bond designed to create a safe environment for learning and development.
The relationship between a teacher and a student is very crucial in learning. It is highly essential in an effective classroom. When students feel comfortable and respected, they learn better. A friendly and supportive teacher helps students feel confident to ask questions and share their ideas. Positive teacher – student relationships are supportive and fair, and develop a learning environment where students feel safe, connected and appreciated. Teachers build connections with students when they demonstrate respect and trust. Teachers are not only instructors but also mentors and guides. They guide students not only in studies but also in building good habits and values. Their words, kindness and encouragement can inspire curiosity and motivate students to do their best. Students too have an important role in this relationship. Respect towards teachers, attentiveness, and willingness to learn, open communication strengthen the bond between teacher and student. When students believe their teachers know and care for them as individuals, they are more willing to take risks and make mistakes and to see these mistakes not as failures but as opportunities to learn. When there is mutual respect between teachers and students, the classroom becomes a happy place to learn. This relationship helps students grow academically and personally.
However, those students who have a close positive and supportive relationship with their teachers will attain higher levels of achievements than those students with more conflict in their relationship.
