Classroom participation refers to the active involvement of students in the learning process within a classroom setting. It encompasses various behaviour and activities such as asking questions, answering questions, involvement in discussion, sharing ideas and opinions, collaborating with peers, and in activities or exercises as a part of the lesson. Effective classroom participation encourages students to interact with the subject matter, promotes critical thinking, enhances communication skills, language skills as well as presentation skills and fosters a collaborative learning environment.
Lack of participation in the class may be the hindrance in student’s learning process. It is very crucial to find out the causes of less participation in the class and needs to examine as soon possible to make learning process effective.

1.       Shyness or Introversion
Some individuals are naturally reserved and may feel uncomfortable speaking up in front of the mass. They may refer to listen rather than speak up in class, which can lead to lower level of participation.

2.       Lack of confidence
Due to the fear of being judged or not feeling confident in their knowledge, some students may refrain from participating actively in class discussion.

3.       Cultural or language barrier
Students from different cultural backgrounds or non- native speakers of the language might hesitate due to language proficiency norms or cultural norms.

4.       Fear of being wrong
Some students worry about making mistakes or giving incorrect answers. Though they know the answers, they feared to speak up in front of the class thinking that they will be the reason of laughter, which can interrupt them from participating.

5.       Learning styles
Each individual has different style of learning or grabbing the information . Some of them prefer verbal information whereas some prefer to receive information quietly.

6.       Classroom environment
Factors such as competitive atmosphere, lack of encouragement from teachers, or dominance by a few outspoken student can determine others from participation.

7.       Distraction
External factors such as personal problems, stress, lack of interest in subject matter, lack of concentration and sometimes students teacher’s relation may be the barrier for them to participate in the classroom. On the other hand, if a teacher doesn’t actively encourage participation or makes the classroom environment intimidating, students may be less inclined to speak up.

As a teacher, he/she needs to go the extra mile, come up with alternatives to improve class participation, and make sure no one is left behind.
Strategies for encouraging student’s participation

Encouraging student participation is crucial for creating an engaging and interactive learning environment.
1.   Think – Pair –Share

It is a collaborative learning strategy where students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. Each student thinks about the question individually and is encouraged to take notes. They pair up to exchange and discuss their ideas and share their extended ideas with the whole class. It is considered one of the effective strategy to bring students in participation.
2.   Create a safe environment

It is necessary to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas without fear of judgment.
3.   Build relationship

Teacher needs to develop good relationship with the students . If the bonding between the teachers and students remain positive, students feel valued and respected and get motivated for participation.
4.   Provide positive feedback

One of the easiest ways to encourage the students to participate in class is to offer praise when they do share their work, answer question etc. Many experts suggest that children thrive off of positive reinforcement and cheerful messages such as ‘excellent job’ , or a simple gesture(such as thumbs up). This will generate good feelings within the students and encourage them to speak up.
5.   Allow them to work together

Break students into small groups to discuss a topic or solve a problem. This reduces the pressure of speaking in front of the whole class and encourages participation from all group members.
By implementing these strategies consistently, teacher can create a collaborative classroom environment where students feel empowered to participate actively without hesitation in discussions and activities.
